Substance Highlights

Tetracaine

Tetracaine is a local anesthetic. Like lidocaine and procaine, it can increase the severity of responses to illicit drugs and, at toxic levels, may trigger adverse effects such as seizures. It has a longer duration of action than many other local anesthetics and is commonly found with medetomidine in street drug samples.

Fentanyl Pre-Precursor and Precursor Chemicals

Fentanyl pre-precursor and precursor chemicals, including Tetramethyl-4-AP and Tetramethyl-4-Piperidinol, are substances used in the chemical synthesis of fentanyl or fentanyl analogues. They are generally not active opioids themselves but may indicate incomplete or poor manufacturing processes.

Cocaine

Cocaine is a DEA Schedule II stimulant with a high potential for addiction. It can cause:

  • Restlessness
  • Paranoia
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of appetite
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures

Key Findings

  • Medetomidine detection increased slightly compared with the previous month but remained lower than levels typically observed earlier in the year.
  • Cocaine was detected in 56% of tested samples, representing the highest detection rate recorded to date.
  • The report notes that the observed decrease in fentanyl and medetomidine detections, along with the increase in cocaine detections, is unlikely to reflect a major shift in the overall drug supply. Instead, it may indicate that individuals using stimulants are increasingly submitting samples for testing.
