Substance Highlights

Quinine

A medication primarily used to treat malaria, but it has also been detected as an adulterant in drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Some studies show that quinine can enhance the behavioral effects of stimulants, and at high levels (toxicity) can cause vomiting and blindness.

BTMPS (Tinuvin®)

An industrial chemical not intended for use in humans or animals. It is used as a protective coating in plastics to prevent breakdown from UV rays. At this time, side effects from BTMPS in humans are not well known.

Levamisole

A veterinary antiparasitic that is used as an adulterant in street drugs, particularly in cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl. In humans, levamisole can cause adverse health affects such as a reduction in white cell count and necrotic skin wounds.

  • This month there was a decrease in methamphetamine and an increase in fentanyl in samples tested. This is potentially due to less isolated methamphetamine samples collected this month.
  • The presence of certain local anesthetics, quinine, and BTMPS remains unstable, with wide variation over the last few months.
  • Although not widespread, there has recently been a noticeable increase in the detection of levamisole.
