Substance Highlights

Quinine

Quinine is a medication primarily used to treat malaria but has also been detected as an adulterant in drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Some studies suggest it may enhance the behavioral effects of stimulants, while toxic levels can cause adverse effects including vomiting and blindness.

BTMPS (Tinuvin®)

BTMPS is an industrial chemical not intended for human or animal use. It is commonly used as a protective coating in plastics to prevent UV degradation. Its effects on humans are not yet well understood.

Levamisole

Levamisole is a veterinary antiparasitic used as an adulterant in street drugs, particularly cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl. In humans, it may reduce white blood cell counts and cause severe skin injuries, including necrotic wounds.

Key Findings

  • During January 2026, fentanyl was the most commonly detected compound, appearing in 98% of tested samples.
  • Heroin detection increased substantially to 36%, compared with an average of approximately 10% during the previous months of 2025.
  • For the first time since February 2025, no tested samples contained methamphetamine.
  • The report also notes notable increases in the frequency of BTMPS, quinine, and levamisole detections.
