Substance Highlights

Medetomidine

Like xylazine, medetomidine is a veterinary tranquilizer that is not approved for human use and is considered more potent than xylazine. Common adverse effects include sedation, bradycardia (slow heart rate), and severe withdrawal symptoms.

Tetracaine

Tetracaine is a local anesthetic. Like lidocaine and procaine, it can increase the severity of reactions to illicit drugs and, at toxic levels, may cause adverse effects such as seizures. Tetracaine has a longer duration of action than many other local anesthetics and is commonly detected alongside medetomidine in street drug samples.

Key Findings

  • No new substances were identified during the previous month. However, fentanyl, medetomidine, and tetracaine were the most commonly detected compounds, with tetracaine remaining the predominant local anesthetic.
  • There has been a notable decline in the presence of xylazine in tested samples over recent months. December 2025 had the lowest xylazine detection rate recorded during 2025.
  • The report notes that the sample size for the month was significantly smaller than in previous months and should be considered when interpreting trends.
